Not in preschool anymore
August 7, 2006 - it was Samyi's first day at his new kindergarten, Community Magnet. No it wasn't actually the start of his schoolyear but he got to attend his first summer camp and get a glimpse of what to come for the next 6 years there.
Kinda strange watching him move onto this new stage of his life. Everyday it feels like he's slowly moving away from me, growing into his own person.
I remember when he was two and started going to preschool, aka daycare. Sue and I were both working back then and we used to drop him off in the morning before we headed to work. To make the long story short, I hated it. That preschool had a dim, long, wide hallway. Stepping into that hallway to reach his class used to make me want to pick him up and run back out. Luckily, Samyi didn't cry much and adapted to his new surroundings well. But it's etched forever in my memory the feeling of walking down that hallway and handing him off to his caretaker. And that look he would give me when I waved goodbye.
Watching him go to summer camp isn't as bad as coming back out in that hallway. But he did want to me stay today with him. Guess it's still too new for him but I know he'll again adapt. Maybe that's what makes me feel sad - him adapting and growing up. The unspoken feeling that with each passing day, he'll need me less and less. Maybe I AM having feminine thoughts as a friend once called it. If I could freeze time, I'd like to freeze these days so I can have my boy all to myself forever. Where is Peter Pan when you need him?
